Watch: IPL 2024 opener Sanjay Manjrekar is delighted with a vintage version of MS Dhoni’s trademark run out

The five-time IPL champion captain of the Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni, dazzled everyone on Friday night with an outstanding runout in the team’s first game of the season against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The home crowd at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium gave the 42-year-old Dhoni a standing ovation after his outstanding effort to remove RCB’s Anuj Rawat on the last delivery of the innings.

The panel of commentators included Sanjay Manjrekar, who said that while Dhoni may not have practiced the underarm toss in the previous year, the World Cup-winning captain still seemed to be extremely smooth.

“I doubt that he would have spent more than a year honing this kind of underarm toss. He would hardly ever make a mistake since it is so ingrained in his DNA. He concentrates on the stumps because of his mental clarity, Manjrekar said on radio.

In a JioCinema conversation, former Indian cricket player Suresh Raina, who captained CSK under Dhoni, too showered the great captain with adulation.

For years, he has never missed it. Suresh Raina said on JioCinema, “He loses his gloves and throws overarms when he defends the total.”

After defeating RCB by six wickets, CSK, under recently chosen captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, got off to a great start in the IPL 2024 season.

With this victory, CSK continued to dominate RCB at home, having defeated them in eight of their previous meetings at Chepauk.

Since the 2008 IPL’s first season in Chennai, RCB has not won a single game there.

After winning the toss, RCB captain Du Plessis decided to bat first. Anuj Rawat (48) and Dinesh Karthik (38*) helped the team rally from a precarious position at 78/5 to record a competitive target of 173/6.

CSK had no difficulty chasing a total of 174, as they reached the winning runs with eight balls remaining. Rachin Ravindra, the opening batter for CSK, got 37 runs off of 15 balls, making him the team’s top scorer. Ravindra is from New Zealand.

Mustafizur Rahman, the CSK pacer, was named Player of the Match for his outstanding 4/29 stats.
