Matthew Wade is quitting professional cricket

Matthew Wade, an Australian wicketkeeper-battler, said on Friday that he would not play in the Sheffield Shield final this coming Saturday, but he will still be eligible for selection in white-ball competitions.

Wade’s career as a red-ball player, which began in 2012, will come to an end on March 21 when Tasmania and Western Australia play in the Sheffield Shield final.

The left-handed hitter will play for the Gujarat Titans in the Twenty24 Indian Premier League after that game, however, he will miss the first few games due to the Shield final conflicting with the league schedule.

“Playing for my country while wearing the baggy green remains a highlight of my career, and although I will continue to play white ball cricket, I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges that the long-form game provides,” Wade said in a statement.

Wade played 36 Test matches for Australia, scoring 1613 runs at an average of 29.87, including four hundreds.

In 2021, he had his last Test match in Brisbane against India, when he was replaced by Alex Carrey.

“I’ve always ranked red-ball cricket as my favorite format. What I will miss is sharing a drink with my teammates after four days of really slogging it out in a first-class game.

He said, “I’ve played franchise leagues all over the world, and you don’t get that feeling.”

Wade did, however, play a big part in Australia’s successful run in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Wade has improved as a finisher in the T20 format in recent years.

One of his most notable innings from the quarterfinal in Dubai was his undefeated 41 off only 17 balls against Pakistan.
