Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made the announcement in a speech in London on Thursday that the UK would serve as the home base for the first AI Safety Institute, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s investigation and testing of novel forms of artificial intelligence.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-253133″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-the-uk-will-host-the-worlds-first-ai-safety-institute-suraj-sunak-aaii-11zon-750×422.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com the uk will host the worlds first ai safety institute suraj sunak aaii 11zon” width=”1393″ height=”784″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-the-uk-will-host-the-worlds-first-ai-safety-institute-suraj-sunak-aaii-11zon-750×422.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-the-uk-will-host-the-worlds-first-ai-safety-institute-suraj-sunak-aaii-11zon-768×432.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-the-uk-will-host-the-worlds-first-ai-safety-institute-suraj-sunak-aaii-11zon-390×220.jpg 390w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-the-uk-will-host-the-worlds-first-ai-safety-institute-suraj-sunak-aaii-11zon-150×84.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-the-uk-will-host-the-worlds-first-ai-safety-institute-suraj-sunak-aaii-11zon.jpg 800w” sizes=”(max-width: 1393px) 100vw, 1393px” title=”The UK will host the world's first AI Safety Institute: Suraj Sunak 3″>

The British Indian leader, who just finished a year in office, stated that he sincerely believes that technologies like AI (Artificial Intelligence) will bring about a transformation “as far-reaching as the industrial revolution, the coming of electricity, or the birth of the internet” ahead of hosting the first Global AI Safety Summit next week. But along with those waves of progress and all the benefits they bring, there come “new dangers and new fears” that also need to be faced head-on.

If this is done incorrectly, AI may make it simpler to create biological or chemical weapons. AI might be used by terrorist organizations to wreak even more havoc and terror. Criminals may utilize AI for fraud, misinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, or even child sex abuse, Sunak said.

He also mentioned the “most unlikely and extreme” concerns people have about artificial intelligence (AI), which is frequently referred to as “super intelligence,” or about mankind completely losing control over technology.

“People shouldn’t be losing sleep over this danger at this time. I want to avoid seeming alarmist. There is also a lot of disagreement on this; some experts believe it will never occur at all. However improbable and unpredictable these hazards may be, Sunak said that the repercussions would be grave if they materialized.

“And when so many of the leading technologists themselves raise concerns about these dangers, it is the duty of leaders to act upon them. And I’m doing just that right now,” he said.

“It will advance the world’s knowledge of AI safety and it will carefully examine, evaluate, and test new types of AI, so that we understand what each new model is capable of; exploring all the risks, from social harms like bias and misinformation, through to the most extreme risks of all,” he said in announcing the establishment of the new AI Safety Institute.

He continued by confirming that “nearly a billion pounds” had been invested in a supercomputer that was “thousands of times faster than the one you have at home” and that an additional 2.5 billion pounds had been invested on “quantum computers,” which had the potential to outperform even supercomputers by an exponential margin.

In advance of the Global AI Safety Summit, which is scheduled for November 1 and 2, at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire—the birthplace of modern computing—where renowned British mathematician Alan Turing’s team is credited with cracking the Enigma code approximately eight decades ago, turning the tide of World War II—the speech is being given.

“We are bringing together the world’s top civil society representatives with the leading AI companies and the most advanced AI-using countries,” Sunak said. Indeed, China has been invited.

“I am aware that some people would argue that they ought to have been left out. However, any meaningful AI plan must at the very least attempt to include all of the major AI powers in the globe. Although it may not have been the easiest course of action, that was the correct one.

At the same time as the address, the UK government released a new study that included an evaluation by the UK intelligence community on the potential benefits and hazards associated with artificial intelligence (AI). At the summit next week, the publication will be used as a discussion paper.
