<p>Sehwag’s remark was made the day after his former teammate from India and Delhi, BJP MP Gautam Gambhir, found himself in the center of a scandal after making an offensive gesture to a part of the Pallekele audience during India’s Asia Cup game.</p>
<p>The explosive opening batter, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2015, responded to a tweet that suggested that Sehwag should have been an MP before Gautam Gambhir by stating that sports figures shouldn’t get involved in politics and that those who do so are only doing so out of “ego and hunger for power.”</p>

My opinion is that most athletes or celebrities should stay out of politics since most are simply interested in advancing their own egos and gaining power; they seldom ever have time for real relationships with people, he added.<br />
“I love being involved with cricket and commentating, and being a part-time MP whenever convenient is not something I ever aspire for,” he said in the same post.</p>
<p>Sehwag’s comments have sparked a larger discussion regarding the influence of celebrities and sports figures on politics in India. Numerous athletes from a variety of sports have transitioned into politics after hanging up their boots.</p>
<p>His former opening partner for India, Gambhir, who is working as a commentator for the Asia Cup now taking place in Sri Lanka, defended him on Tuesday by claiming that the spectators were yelling anti-Indian chants. The World Cup-winning team’s starting batter tweeted about the situation.</p>
<p>“While the truth is putting on its shoes, a falsehood may fly halfway across the globe. Nothing is exactly as it appears. Any Indian would retort to the kind of anti-national rhetoric as I did. I adore my nation and I love our athletes, Gambhir remarked on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).</p>
