State of Joy on the Future of Performance Footwear: Why Biomechanics Is Replacing Cushioning as the Next Innovation

State of Joy on the Future of Performance Footwear: Why Biomechanics Is Replacing Cushioning as the Next Innovation

For decades, innovation in performance footwear has revolved around making shoes lighter, softer and faster. Every few years, brands have introduced new cushioning technologies, advanced foams and redesigned midsoles, each promising greater comfort and improved performance. Yet despite these advancements, one aspect of footwear has remained surprisingly unchanged, the shape of the shoe itself.

Today, that conversation is beginning to shift. As consumers become increasingly aware of mobility, posture, recovery and long-term foot health, they are looking beyond cushioning alone. Instead, they are asking a more fundamental question: does the shoe actually allow the foot to move the way it was designed to?

It is a shift that homegrown performance footwear brand State of Joy believes will define the industry’s next phase of innovation.

Why the Performance Footwear Industry Is Looking Beyond Cushioning to Foot Biomechanics

The global performance footwear industry has traditionally focused on technologies that improve responsiveness, impact absorption and energy return. While these innovations have transformed athletic footwear, experts are increasingly highlighting another factor that influences movement, the natural mechanics of the foot itself.

The human foot is designed to spread, stabilise and adapt with every step. Natural toe splay helps create a wider base of support, contributing to balance, stability and efficient movement. However, most conventional sneakers continue to feature tapered toe boxes that gradually compress the forefoot, prioritising familiar silhouettes over natural foot anatomy. As conversations around biomechanics become more mainstream, footwear brands are beginning to rethink whether conventional designs truly support the body’s natural movement.

According to State of Joy, this represents one of the biggest untapped opportunities in modern footwear innovation.

“Performance footwear has evolved significantly in materials and cushioning, but very little attention has been paid to whether the shoe actually complements the body’s natural mechanics,” said Bachi Pulella, Co-founder of State of Joy. “We believe the next breakthrough won’t simply come from another foam compound or sole technology. It will come from understanding how the human body moves and designing footwear that works with it rather than against it.”

How State of Joy Anatom Uses Wide Toe Box Design to Support Natural Foot Movement

This philosophy led to the development of Anatom, State of Joy’s latest performance footwear collection.

Rather than beginning with a conventional sneaker silhouette, the company’s design team started by studying foot anatomy and biomechanics. The result is a wide toe box performance shoe that allows the toes to spread naturally inside the shoe while supporting balance, stability and push-off during everyday movement and training.

To introduce the collection, State of Joy recently released a digital film that traces the journey of the human foot from barefoot movement to modern footwear design. Through anatomical illustrations, product development visuals and in-house prototyping, the campaign encourages consumers to question why narrow toe boxes became the industry norm despite the foot naturally widening at the front.

“With Anatom, we intentionally changed the starting point of product development,” said Dasari Raju Ramesh, Co-founder of State of Joy. “Instead of asking how we could make another performance sneaker, we asked how the foot naturally functions. Every design decision followed that research. We wanted to create footwear that gives the foot the space it needs to move naturally without compromising on performance or everyday comfort.”

State of Joy Founders Believe Biomechanics Will Shape the Future of Performance Footwear

The founders believe that consumer priorities are evolving rapidly as awareness around movement, recovery and preventive wellness continues to grow.

“People today invest in strength training, physiotherapy, mobility exercises and recovery because they understand that movement affects long-term health,” Pulella said. “It was only a matter of time before the same thinking extended to footwear. We see biomechanics becoming one of the defining conversations in the performance footwear industry over the next decade.”

Anatom by State of Joy  is intended to represent more than a single product launch. The company sees it as the first step towards building a research-led performance footwear brand where innovation begins with human movement rather than seasonal design trends.

“We’re not trying to create another sneaker that follows what’s already in the market,” added Ramesh. “Our ambition is to build an Indian performance footwear brand recognised for solving real movement challenges through research, design and innovation. Anatom reflects that philosophy, but it’s only the beginning of where we want to go.”

Anatom by State of Joy, a Research-Led Innovation

State of Joy has steadily expanded its footprint in India’s footwear market, selling nearly half a million pairs, growing from ₹80 crore towards ₹100 crore in revenue and establishing a presence across more than 4,000 multi-brand outlets, with its first exclusive brand outlet set to open soon.

As the industry increasingly shifts its focus from aesthetics alone towards biomechanics, movement efficiency and long-term foot health, State of Joy believes the next generation of performance footwear will be defined less by how a shoe looks and more by how naturally it allows the body to move. Through Anatom, the company hopes to lead that conversation while demonstrating that meaningful innovation begins not with trends, but with understanding the human body.
